Brewery conversion within Arundel’s historic castle setting

Overview

Positioned on a ridge above the River Arun and set within the historic boundary of Arundel Castle, this project transforms a group of underused buildings into a working brewery with public and operational spaces. The scheme brings together an old engine shed, a former stable block, and an outbuilding, creating a cohesive destination that includes a bar, tap room, office space, and canning line.
The site sits within a rich historic setting, with views across the town of Arundel and close proximity to key heritage assets, including the castle walls and St Mary’s Gate.

The challenge

Working within this setting required a careful balance between change and preservation.

The site lies within the Arundel Castle walls, which, along with the nearby town gate, are designated heritage assets recognised by Historic England. The surrounding area reflects significant 19th-century remodelling, while also sitting close to earlier medieval structures such as St Mary’s Gate.
Each of the existing buildings brought its own constraints. The structures varied in age, condition, and original use, requiring a joined-up approach to create a functional and accessible space for modern brewing operations.

The elevated position on chalk geology, formed during the Cretaceous period, also informed ground conditions and drainage considerations across the site.

Our approach

The design focuses on bringing the buildings together in a way that feels natural and well-resolved.

Each structure has been adapted to suit a specific function within the brewery. The former engine shed provides space for production, including the canning line. The stable block and outbuilding accommodate the public-facing elements, including the bar and tap room, alongside office space to support day-to-day operations.

Internally, the layout is organised to support a clear working flow, from brewing through to packaging, while also allowing visitors to experience the process in a safe and engaging way.

Externally, the character of the buildings has been retained and enhanced where needed, ensuring the development sits comfortably within the wider historic context. Materials and detailing have been chosen to complement the surrounding architecture and reflect the established character of the area.
The elevated position of the site has been used to advantage, creating a strong sense of place with views across the town and towards the surrounding landscape.

Outcome

The completed scheme brings a group of underused historic buildings back into active use, creating a brewery that is both functional and welcoming.

By working closely with the existing structures and their setting, the project supports the ongoing life of the site while respecting its heritage significance. The result is a space that contributes to the local economy, adds to the experience of visitors to Arundel, and sits comfortably within one of the town’s most historically rich areas.
