Turning a run down building into safe, supportive living
Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire
Overview
This project started with a tired three storey building that had been loosely divided into units but was no longer fit for purpose. Our client saw the potential to do something meaningful. The aim was to transform the building into a safe, well designed living environment that could support a charity use, such as a refuge. Over an eight month programme, the building was fully renovated to provide 28 bedrooms with ensuites, five large shared kitchens and generous communal space.
The challenge
- A building in poor condition with outdated layouts.
- Partially divided units that did not function well.
- The need to maximise bedroom numbers without compromising dignity or comfort.
- Creating a balance between private space and shared living.
- Delivering a robust, practical building suitable for long term supported use.
- Run down building which needed a lot of work.
The vision
- Create a place that feels safe, calm and supportive.
- Not institutional. Not temporary.
- A home where people can have privacy when they need it and access to shared space when they want it.
- The design needed to be practical, durable and easy to manage, while still feeling welcoming.
The solution
A complete internal rethink
- The existing fragmented layout was stripped back and redesigned.
- Circulation was simplified to make movement through the building clear and safe.
- Each floor was planned to balance private rooms with shared amenities.
Private rooms with dignity
- 28 bedrooms were created, each with its own ensuite.
- Rooms were designed to feel simple, clean and comfortable.
- Ensuites ensure privacy and independence for residents.
Shared spaces that work
- Five large shared kitchens were introduced across the building.
- Each kitchen is sized to comfortably support multiple residents.
- A large communal lounge provides space to gather, relax and build a sense of community.
Practical and durable design
- Materials and finishes were chosen for longevity and ease of maintenance.
- Additional storage spaces were included to support both residents and operators.
- The layout supports day to day management without feeling restrictive.
The outcome
The building has been completely transformed. What was once run down and underused is now a fully functioning residential facility designed for supported living. Residents have their own private space, alongside shared areas that encourage connection and routine. The building is now suitable for a charity lease, providing a safe and stable environment for those who need it most.
Why it works
- Privacy and community balanced. Ensuite rooms offer independence, while shared kitchens and lounge spaces support connection.
- Clear and simple layout. The building is easy to navigate and manage.
- Designed for real use. Every space has been planned with day to day living in mind.
- Built to last. Durable materials and practical design ensure long term performance.
Looking ahead
This project shows how existing buildings can be reimagined to provide meaningful, supportive accommodation. Not just a refurbishment. A complete shift in purpose, creating a place that offers safety, stability and a sense of home.
